I N 2 0 1 2 , KEN SCHR ECENGOS T
had an
unexpected heart attack. He received a stent in his
left anterior descending coronary artery and made
a nearly full recovery. But during follow-up testing
15 months later, his left ventricular function was
found to be severely reduced. Because of this he
was told that he had a high risk of suffering another
cardiac arrest.
Cardiac electrophysiologist Robert D. Swenson, MD,
FACC, recommended that Ken get a subcutaneous
implantable cardiac defibrillator. The S-ICD System is implanted under the
skin and is capable of delivering lifesaving shocks in the case of ventricular
fibrillation. The benefits of this system over the commonly used
transvenous ICD are that no wires are placed into any blood vessel and
no hardware is placed in the heart itself, eliminating the potential for
vascular injury and reducing the potential for systemic infection.
Ken had the two-hour outpatient procedure in October 2013
at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, and his recovery was
seamless. He only missed five days of work, and within five weeks
he was no longer aware of the implant under his arm. Today, Ken is
doing all of his normal activities, with peace of mind about his heart.
“The team was thorough,” Ken says. “They explained everything to
me, including the risks, and I have done well with it.” He’s looking forward to
golfing this summer.
